| introduction
to the environment section |
Residents
of Leigh are fortunate in having such a good environment in
which to live and to raise a family. We benefit from having
the sea and shoreline to the south and Belfairs Park and woods
to the north. In between, the residential streets still retain
a feeling of openness despite the efforts of building developers
to close up every gap. Leigh also contains four conservation
areas which means some of our architectural heritage will be
protected.
Incidents of crime are comparatively low though anti-social
behaviour is on the increase. Those who value the environment,
both natural and man-made, must be vigilant and assertive when
it comes to its protection.
In the crime prevention area there are many ways in which concerned
citizens can actively play a part to help make Leigh both safer
and more enjoyable.
The natural environment however urgently needs more ways in
which it can be actively supported. |

Due
to the growing number of cars and the lack of car parking spaces,
residential front gardens are increasingly being concreted over
with a resulting loss of plants and shrubs. There is an increasing
tendency for cars to be parked on grass verges thereby turning
them into rutted and muddy strips. Trees are being felled to
provide for wider roads or to enable new buildings to reach
right up to the pavements.
Apart from along the London Road, public transport is virtually
non-existant; indeed yet more bus routes are to be closed in
2005. The Council seems to have no integrated transport policy.
All that happens is that £7million is spent on "improving"
the London Road so that cars can move a bit faster to arrive
at places where parking spaces are few and expensive.
Belfairs Woods & Nature Reserve, Belton Gardens, Bonchurch
Park and Hadleigh Park are valuable resources and make a vital
contribution to the quality of life of the local community.
These must be protected and enhanced. |
| We
therefore seek to.......... |
- To
promote issues of community interest.
- To
encourage the residents of Leigh to participate in
local affairs.
|
- To
raise awareness on matters which threaten Leigh's
character and environment.
- To publicise
local groups
