WLRA
fully supports initiatives that will improve the facilities
available to the young people of West Leigh.
In 2006 WLRA recommended that the additional £10,000 ward
budget be spent on youth projects; our ward councillors however
decide instead that the money would be better spent on putting
30mph speed warning signs on Marine Parade.
At the Business and Ratepayers Consultative Forum on 1st February
2007 WLRA asked Southend Council's executive board: Whilst the
Association welcomes the recently re-opened Youth Centre at
the rear of the Leigh Community Centre, we feel that much more
should be done to provide additional facilities across the Borough.
Would the Council consider opening discussion with local schools
to provide their premises/playing fields for out of hours use
by our youth?
Answer (verbal): The Council is mindful of the need to improve
facilities for youth; tapping into finance for this is the issue.
Some schools are opening longer. The real challenges are: access
to finance, working out what children actually want and finding
adults to help run them. |

Skate Park / Youth Activity Centre |
|
Leigh
Town Council is committed to building a new skateboard park
on Leigh Marshes alongside the Recycling Centre. Although
it is called a Skate Park, it will include a basketball court,
football goals, a sitting out area and a cycle track.
The total cost is estimated at £280,000. £150,000
will be coming from the BIG Lottery Fund as part of the award
made to Southend Council's Play Strategy; the balance will
come from funds already accuimulated by Leigh Town Council.
Leigh
Town Council is drawing up a final design (with most of the
input coming from skateboarders) and when this is done, will
apply for planning permission.
