Leigh
Town Council organises escorted theatre and concert trips
and outings for pensioners living in the town. The Council's
Community Transport team operate an number of mini-buses which
pick up guests from their doors, take them to the local venue
and return them back home afterwards. In 2005 the scheme had
246 members and organised 13 outtings.
In 2006
Leigh Town Council's Community Transport programme won a 'Community
Empowerment' award for the South East of England and took
national second place in the 'older people' category, beating
off competition from other councils from all around Britain.
The Community
Transport programme, which has been running for 9 years is
extremely popular in Leigh, and has now been recognised as
an award winning way of giving more independence to older
residents by providing the opportunity for them to go to theatres,
concerts, trips etc.
